A Few Days in Boothbay

We got up early to make the run from Indiantown to Boothbay, navigating the relatively narrow, twisty cut between the two. We timed our departure for the 7:30 opening of the Southport Bridge, which only opens on request at the top and bottom of the hour from 6am to 6pm. Our timing was just about perfect, and we only had to hold position for a few minutes before slipping through. We picked up our mooring at Carousel Marina early and settled in for the day. We expected it to be quiet but were still surprised to see most of the moorings empty.

That evening, even with fog settling in, we decided to head ashore for dinner at Footbridge Brewery. We left Windara’s anchor light on and marked her position on the chart on Chris’s phone, just in case the fog thickened on the way back. In a more exposed anchorage we would have stayed aboard, but here we could hug the shoreline and knew we’d be able to find our way back safely.

The fog rolled in heavily but seemed to hang just over town, leaving the mooring field oddly clear. It was an odd feeling to break free of the fog in town and have a clear run back to the boat – it was the opposite of what I expected.

The fog did fill in overnight, and we were greeted by a foggy sunrise the next day. That night, I used some of the pears we picked to make a pear tart for dinner – a definite keeper. It’s meant to be a dessert, but without the sugar it works surprisingly well as a light meal or appetizer.

Before work on Friday, we walked to Bristol Marine to check out the USS Niagra, a tall ship from the War of 1812 undergoing restoration. I’m always awed by these old wooden ships and the amount of work they took to build and maintain. After work, we wandered around town, got ice cream from Downeast Ice Cream Factory and stopped in at Sherman’s Books – always a favorite.

Yesterday morning it was time to move on, so we took out our trash, got pump out and slipped the lines. We still didn’t make it to the Burnt Island lighthouse, but we’ll keep it on the list for next time.
