“The best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray,” and this weekend proved that out.
Originally the forecast said yesterday would be rough but today would be more settled – and after we made the call to make a straight run to Norfolk today, the forecast changed. This morning was absolutely howling, cloudy and miserable, but we were still really torn on whether or not to go. The conditions here were sporty but nothing we hadn’t sailed in on Long Island Sound, but we’d heard the area around Old Point Comfort down by Norfolk can get miserable with wind and tide against. We called the Tow Boat US that’s based down in Norfolk, and he said that he couldn’t promise that he’d be able to get his boats out if anything happened due to the sea state. With no good ditch point between here and Norfolk, we decided to wait until Tuesday when the weather should improve.
As I write I’m sitting on the porch overlooking the marina, watching the boats get knocked around in their slips. I’ve realized I don’t even notice when Silent Sky rocks anymore unless I really think about it. It turned into a beautiful day, a nice contrast to the gray we’ve had the past few days, but the wind is still up and it’s pretty choppy in the inlet. I do wish we’d gotten stuck somewhere that’s more walkable, but at least the marina itself is really nice and it’s been nice to slow down and soak in the sun.
