We had a lazy, slow sail for most of the trip up to the Rappahannock. We knew the afternoon breeze was supposed to kick up, but until it did, we were plagued by black flies. I don’t think I’ve ever killed so many flies in my life. When the breeze filled in, it really piped up and we were outsailing most of the similarly-sized catamarans out there.
The wind went from 5kts to 15-20, gusting up to near 30 at times. The Chesapeake tends to develop a short period chop when the wind kicks up, and we were rocking and rolling. It took us a while to get into the protection of the Deltaville peninsula, and shortly after we did, the wind died back to 8-12.
We found a quiet spot up Carter Creek, and our little anchorage is perfect – so quiet you can hear the rustle of the leaves in the trees ashore. We’re surrounded by ospreys and eagles, and the water is full of little jellyfish. The local crabbers come by in the mornings to empty and re-bait their pots, and locals cruise by in the evenings in their Duffys. We’ve taken a few dinghy missions to explore all the little side branches of the river and there are so many pretty spots here. We’ve been looking for a dinghy dock so we can go ashore to explore, but we didn’t find anything obvious.
Deltaville Boat Yard said they can haul us out on Wednesday, and while I’m excited to get in and have them start work ahead of schedule, I’m bummed that we aren’t going to have more time to visit town and that we won’t make it up to Urbana, but hopefully it means we’ll get our work done faster and be on our way.
