Another beautiful, early morning departure had us heading back to Hope Town before work. We decided to anchor out by Firefly for a couple nights before heading back into Hope Town Harbor. We were in need of a Tuesday morning trash run and we stopped in at the fuel dock to get gas for Squall, where we ran into our friend, JR, who took us out when Chris’s parents visited. We decided to meet up at Firefly after work for drinks. It turned out to be sushi night, and it was really good! After dinner, JR took us around to show us some local spots for groceries/food/drinks, and we really appreciated the “insider info.”
We spent the weekend just enjoying our surroundings – we walked the beach up to the north end and saw fewer than 10 people the whole time, even though it was a beautiful day. Later, we wandered over to On Da Beach for lunch and spent a while sitting in the Adirondack chairs, reading our books before heading back for another trip up the lighthouse. The wind was howling, but the views were breathtaking (both figuratively and literally). We got in a final dinner at Cap’n Jacks (and had the place literally to ourselves for the first part of dinner). On Sunday we made french toast with the coconut bread we bought at Vernons, took a photo walk, hung out and read poolside at the Hope Town Inn & Marina, and took a dip in the crystal clear water at our favorite ocean beach.
A bunch of the boats who are fixtures in Hope Town have now started their journeys home, and it really drove home how limited our remaining time here is.
While Man-O-War has its gravity, Hope Town has quite possibly an even stronger pull. It’s been our unofficial home base for the past couple months and we’ve spent the most time here out of any of the islands. I’m going to miss living under a lighthouse, shopping at Vernon’s and his sense of humor, and the wonderful community that’s become such an integral part of our experience in the Bahamas. As we moved out to anchor one last time, I won’t pretend it wasn’t emotional. Like I said in an earlier Instagram post, “I think if you’re not a little sad when things are winding down, you’ve been doing it wrong, and I can assure you, we haven’t been.”
One reply on “Hope Town, a Farewell Tour”
It must be hard to leave. We were only there a couple of days and Hometown still had a grip on my psyche. Love it there. It will be good to have you back
