It was cold overnight on anchor, but we slept like the dead. We were up early, and it was amazing how much the anchorage changed with the change in tide –we could now see the oyster beds all around us. We took our time over breakfast before getting under way, and it was nice to not feel rushed.
Our trip from the anchorage to St. Augustine was quick – too quick in fact. We hadn’t accounted for having as much fair current as we did and we needed to slow down – we told the marina that we’d be there at 11:30, and there wouldn’t be anyone there to get our lines if we arrived early. So we got to enjoy the marsh and forest preserve at a leisurely pace, and it was a nice change to be forced to take it slow.
We passed one of those American Star cruise ships, which was so odd to see on the ICW – I didn’t think they’d have enough depth, but apparently they do!
We got to the Bridge of Lions for the 11:30 opening with 15 minutes to spare, and Chris practiced holding station beside the Castillo de San Marcos against a current running at 1.5kts. We had a slip reserved at Marker 8 Hotel and Marina, and it was a super easy docking going straight up current.
I love all the long passages we get to make, but sometimes it’s nice to make a short hop.
