Wrightsville Beach, NC

After dropping the hook in the middle of the night, we awoke after a good night’s sleep to find ourselves in a beautiful spot just off an island that’s part of a nature preserve. We started off by ourselves but as the day wore on, we got more and more neighbors until there were 8 other boats anchored around us. We had one of those sunsets where the sky turns to fire and the colors linger, and we had possibly our last sunset meal on deck for a while.

We got moving early yesterday and took Squall into town. We grabbed breakfast at The Workshop – really good bacon, egg and cheese! – and ate on the beach, which was gorgeous with the morning sun backlighting the waves. The morning started off chilly but it turned out to be a nice warm day, and I spent most of it working on deck.

For dinner, we went to Tower 7, a Mexican restaurant in town, and had tacos and margaritas (plus queso blanco), and we were stuffed! It was a beautiful calm night, so we took a quick walk before heading back to the boat. On our way back, a dolphin surfaced in front of us and I think we scared the crap out of each other. As we were putting Squall away, we noticed dolphins feeding to Silent Sky’s port. Shortly after, the wind kicked up and the temperature dropped. The once-calm anchorage that had been so comfortable for the past couple days got rocky and bouncy, and I don’t think either of us slept all that well.

We’re supposed to get another nor’easter, and while the timing keeps changing, the it looks like we’ll have a rough next few days. We had hoped to get to Little River on Saturday and Georgetown on Sunday, and then off to Charleston the next weekend, or hop outside at the Cape Fear River straight to Charleston this weekend, but if we get the conditions currently forecast, we’ll probably stay put since there’s no guarantee that the bridges will open (many swing bridges won’t open in high winds) and offshore just looks miserable.
