We got under way just before dawn on Saturday morning to make our run to Solomons. It was a beautiful morning, if chilly, and we had a gorgeous sunrise as we left. The trip was easy, and we got in relatively early – which was probably a good thing since the anchorages are tight and were pretty full. We found a spot that I thought was a little sketchy since it was basically up this little creek with docks all around (I wasn’t worried so much about depth as room), but once I got used to the idea, it was actually a gorgeous little spot.
We dinghied into town – or at least the strip where the restaurants are – to stretch our legs. We walked around a bit and had dinner at the Lighthouse restaurant. From what we saw, town looked like a quiet, cute little place, and I could totally see spending a weekend. In front of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Chesapeake Biological Lab was an interesting/scary/impactful graphic showing the annual change in local temperature, based on local daily data collected at the lab for 80+ years. The last year is 2019, in which the temperature was +2.5° higher than average.
Another boat anchored pretty close to us, and we were concerned since they seemed to have all-rope rode whereas we had out 50′ of chain, so we laid differently to the wind and current. We also worried that they might be over our anchor, but we kept an eye on them for a while and it didn’t look like we’d bump, even if we ended up facing stern to stern and figured we’d worry about the anchor if and when it came to that. We spent the evening relaxing in the cockpit to the chorus of crickets and the smell of wood fires from around the neighborhood. It was the perfect counterpoint to our time in Annapolis.
